NGE lauds development strides of Gov Eno in A'Ibom

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has applauded the ARISE agenda of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, said it had started yielding the targeted dividends.


Speaking during a courtesy visit to the governor at the Governor's house on Wednesday ahead of the 19th All Nigerian Editors Conference, scheduled to hold from November 15 to 19, 2013. The NGE President, Mr Eze Anaba, 

applauded the governor for accepting to host the guild in the state.



Anaba also lauded the continuum in the government of Akwa Ibom, adding that the development strides of successive governments and the peaceful ambience have undoubtedly made the state a choice destination for all, as demonstrated in the unprecedented number of delegates to the 2023 ANEC.



“We’ve been following your ARISE Agenda, and Akwa Ibom seems to be the only state in Nigeria where there is a continuum in government, and in terms of governance, the government of Akwa Ibom has produced enough for the citizenry.


“So it is now for the people to know what to do with the good governance they’re enjoying,” Anaba said.




Reacting, The state governor, His Excellency Pastor  Umo Eno tasked the guild to uphold the integrity of the profession by striving to maintain objectivity in their reporting.


Eno also advocated a free press, where journalists can praise, criticise, comment, and advise where necessary without undermining the ethics of the profession, and tasked journalists with being conscious of their sacred responsibility of shaping people’s orientation and social order and being the conscience of society.

A'ibom First Lady commissions Skills Acquisition Centre In Obot Akara

Akwa Ibom State First Lady, Pastor Mrs Patience Umo Eno has over the weekend commissioned a Multipurpose Development/Skills Acquisition Center in Obot Akara Local Government Area of the state.

The project, executed by the Chairperson of Obot Akara Local Government Council, Hon. Agnes Udoenwenwen,  was to serve as a vocational hub where indigenes of the area will learn diverse skills and get empowered with starter packs on completion. 

Speaking during the inauguration of the project held at Obot Akara Local Government Council Secretariat, the Governor's wife applauded the Council boss for her foresight in encouraging entrepreneurship amongst the women and youths of the area. 

Eno added that she was impressed by the performance of women holding public offices in the state, noted that there was need for more women to be given opportunity to serve in government. 

"You have all seen how well she has performed since she assumed office about three years ago. This is one Chairperson who has been outstanding in her duty. She has been outstanding in her delivery to this Local Government as evident in this project. 



"The way the women are rejoicing here is a proof that she has been good to them. I congratulate you on this achievement. Well done," she remarked. 


Also speaking, the Chairman of Obot Akara Local Government Council, Lady Agnes Udoenwenwen, said she was delighted to have the Governor's wife present and her entourage at her council Area to commission project undertaken by her administration. 


She noted that having been sworn into office on the 7th day of December, 2020, she has embarked on various life touching projects to justify the rationale behind the democratic principles of political responsibility to the electorates. 



She added that the ultra-modern multipurpose hall / skills Acquisition center would help in training  youths, women and men on various skills to alleviate poverty and uplift the standard among the people. 



In their separate goodwill messages, the Political stakeholders of the area including Senator Emmanuel Ibokessien, Member representing Ikot Ekpene / Obot Akara State Constituency in the AKHA, Hon. Jerry Otu, Immediate past House Member, Rt. Hon. Idongesit Ntepere and the PDP woman leader, Mrs. Grace Umoren, thanked the Governor's wife for visiting the area to inaugurate the Multipurpose Hall built by the Chairperson of the Council, Mrs. Agnes Udoenwenwen, for the benefit of the people. 


While promising to stand by the administration of Governor Umo Eno as he delivers dividends of democracy to the area and the state at large, they asserted that the people of Obot Akara would make good use of the facility provided. 


The First Lady's entourage were, wife of the Deputy Speaker in AKHA,  Mrs Enobong Edidem,   Member representing Ikot Abasi/ Eastern Obolo State Constituency in AKHA, Hon.  Selina Ukpatu, Member representing Urueoffong Oruko State Constituency in AKHA, Hon. Precious Selong and Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebiet, among others.

AKSU Lecturer Bags 2023 NLNG Prize For Literary Criticism

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Lecturer, Dr. Eyoh Asuquo Etim has emerged as the winner of the 2023 Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited Prize award for Literary Criticism.


Dr. Etim, a Lecturer in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Akwa Ibom State University, Obio Akpa Campus, Oruk Anam Local Government holds a B.A. (HONS.) in English; M.A. in English Literature and Ph.D in African Literature. He is a novelist, poet, literary critic and editor.


Face of the First Akwa Ibom man, (a Lecturer, Akwa Ibom State University) to emerge as Winner of 2023 NLNG price for LITERARY CRITICISM, Dr Eyo Asuquo Etim

In a release made available to our correspondent yesterday and signed by the Head,  Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol (Office of the Vice-Chancellor), Mr. Gabriel Otu, stated that the award was presented to the Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. Nse U. Essien, during a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor Tuesday November 7, 2023 at the Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.


In his opening speech, the awardee, who was described as Literary Icon, expressed joy, gratitude, deep sense of humility to the Vice-Chancellor and the Management team for the audience and the opportunity to present the 2023 NLNG Prize to the University. 


According to him, the Nigeria Prizes are annual awards instituted by NLNG to reward excellence in scientific research/innovation and creativity in Nigeria. 


Dr. Etim informed the audience that there are three categories for the awards: The Nigeria Prize for Science; the Nigeria Prize for Literature and the Nigeria Prize for Literary Criticism. 


He explained that for 2023, the Nigeria Prize for Science was won by Prof. Hippolite Amado of Imperial College, London, for his research and innovation aimed at saving the lives of neonates.


 He added that Dr. Obari Gomba, a Lecturer from the University of Port Harcourt, won the Nigeria Prize for Literature with his play entitled 'Grit'.


"I won the Nigeria Prize for Literary Criticism with my paper entitled 'History versus History: A Motherist Rememory of Akachi Ezeigbo's 'The Last of the Strong Ones' and Chimamanda Adichie's 'Half of a Yellow Sun'," he explained.

Since its inception in 2013, the Nigeria Prize for Literary Criticism has had only five winners, with him as the sixth winner in the Country and the first person to win in Akwa Ibom State, which was among several laurels he had won for himself and the University by extension. 


"I believe that it is necessary to build on these achievements in order to keep the name of the University soaring and to improve the University's ranking," he enthused. Dr. Etim concluded that he could do more with the support and encouragement of the University Management through research and sponsorship.


On his part, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Essien congratulated the awardee and thanked him for making the University proud and portraying the University in good light.


Also speaking, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof. Ita Ewa-Oboho applauded the awardee and encouraged young researchers to follow in his footsteps by undergoing collaborative researches as practiced in other climes.


Commenting on the giant stride, the Registrar, Dr. Ebi G. Eno-Ibanga, FNIM commended the prize winner and said the feat attained was as a result of hard work, dedication and focused research. She encouraged him to work harder for more laurels.


In a vote of thanks, the Head of Obio Akpa Campus and Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Nkanikpo Ibok, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the Management team for their words of encouragement to the prize winner. He expressed gladness for the laurel and the image it portrays the University.

A'Ibom First Lady Splashes Gifts Items, Cash on mothers of Multiple birth children

Akwa Ibom state first Lady, Her Excellency Pastor Patience Umo Eno has splashed gift items and Cash on mothers of multiple birth children in Onna

In a bid to curb the scourge of maternal mortality and child morbidity in the state which is a core component of her-soon-to- be - launched pet project, the first Lady disclosed that the gift was meant to ease the burdens associated with raising multiple children.  

 

While speaking at the Empowerment Programme for Multiple Birth Mothers held at the Local Government Secretariat, Abat, the Governor's wife congratulated the mothers on the safe deliveries of their babies and prayed that they would live in good health and fulfil their destinies in life. 



Pastor Patience Eno who expressed her gratitude to Mary Slassor, a Scottish Presbyterian missionary who was famous for her role in stopping the common practice of the killing of twins in Nigeria, said that the babies were blessings to their families and community. 


According to her; "I congratulate you on your safe deliveries. Glory be to Jesus that God, through Mary Slessor, changed the stories of multiple birth children in this country. Today mothers have the freedom of delivering twins, triplets and even quadruplets. 


"Please join me to show love to these gifts from God. These babies have brought blessings to this Local Government Area and their parents. Through them, their families are blessed," the First Lady said.


Our Correspondent reported that the Chairman of ONNA Local Government Council, Mr. Iniabasi Ekanem commended the First Lady for her commitment to pacifying the needs of the less privileged and providing succour for multiple birth mothers, describing the act as a relief to the beneficiaries.


The council Boss who was ably represented by  his beloved wife Mrs Idorenyin Ekanem assured that the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno, will address numerous and encompassing challenges affecting families, especially at the rural communities.




Presenting a goodwill message, Honorary Special Adviser to Governor on Agriculture, Rt. Hon. Owoidoho Ekpoattai, lauded the Governor's wife Pastor Patience Eno for ameliorating the huge burden on families with multiple births and bringing succour to mothers of multiple birth in the area considering the current economic realities.

Veteran Actor appeals financial support to tackle stroke

 



Ameachi Muonagor, best known for his comedy roles has appealed for financial support from the public and well wishers to support him battle a stroke.


Speaking in a virtual video on Thursday night, Amechi disclosed that he had been experiencing a stroke for the past seven months, he  made an appeal to the public for financial help, explained how sorry he was not to let the general public know of it before now was because he thought he would handle is well.




The actor popularly known for playing a fatherly role in the movie Aki and Pawpaw Said: “I am sick, this thing that is called stroke caught up with me, and from there they rushed me to the hospital. The first hospital they rushed me to was in Nnewi, where I spent some two months and I was referred to teaching hospital Nnewi and here I am.


“In that set, I was with Emeka Ani, Patience Ozokwo, Rita Edochie, and Ebele Okaro, at the end of that moment, I was to enter my car when I was struck with this problem and since then it’s getting worse. Right now I cannot move, I can’t walk on my own. All my half of left is paralyzed, so it’s a problem to me.”

 “I’m so sorry I didn’t make it known to the public earlier, because I didn’t know it will last this long, but as it is now, I am calling on well-minded individuals to come to my assistance, to see how they can help me. Its  call paralysis, half of my body.” He said
