Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a bill mandating the House Committee on Works to collaborate with the Ministry of Works and Fire Service to ensure that construction work swiftly commences on Ikot Akpan Abia/Oboyo Ikot Ita Road, in Nsit Ibom State Local Government Area.

This motion was brought to the House by the Member, representing Nsit Ibom State Constituency in the State Parliament, as a response to the alarming situation faced by the residents of the affected communities.

Presenting the motion on the floor of the House, Hon. Akpan explained that, the Ikot Akpan Abia/Oboyo Ikot Ita Road, which connects several communities in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, had become a symbol of abandonment under the previous administration, with contractors relocating their equipment and personnel away from the site.

He noted that the abandonment left the road impassable, leading to significant transportation difficulties and economic hardship for the road users.

"The impact of this neglected infrastructure has been profound, affecting not only the daily lives of residents but also commercial activities in the region.

"Markets, farmlands, schools, and numerous feeder roads are connected to this critical artery. Additionally, the road serves as the shortest route from Nsit Ibom Local Government headquarters to Uyo, the state capital, facilitating essential services and daily commutes for a growing number of residents".

"The economic and social implications of restoring this road are immense. The reconstruction would not only provide improved access for residents and visitors but also stimulate commercial activities in the area and beyond.

"The transportation of agricultural products such as palm oil, kernels, cassava, vegetables, fruits, plantains, yams, cocoyams, and coconuts, which form the economic backbone of the region, would be greatly facilitated", Hon. Akpan elucidated.

As Hon. Akpan yielded the floor, the motion was dully seconded by the Member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Hon. Imoh-Ita.

In his ruling, the House through the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Udeme Ottong adjudged the motion as directional, growth and development centric.

He called on relevant stakeholders to prioritize and expedite the intervention necessary to swiftly reconstruct and restore the abandoned road connecting Ikot Akpan Abia, Ikot Iko, Obo Ntong, Obo Etok, and Oboyo Ikot Ita communities.

According to the Speaker, this action aims to alleviate the economic hardship faced by these communities.

Also, at plenary among other things, the House received two messages from the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.

The messages addressed to the Speaker as read by the Clerk of the House, Mrs. NsikakAbasi Orok are;

A Bill for a law to Amend the Traditional Rulers Law CAP 155 Law of Akwa Ibom State of 2022 and for other Matters therewith and  2023 Supplementary Bill.
