Guber 2023: Delegates protests over planned movement of Guber primaries to Army camp.

 By Theresa Donatus, Uyo

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Delegates in Akwa ibom state have kicked against planned relocation of the party’s gubernatorial primaries slated for May 21st 2022 to Army barracks Ibagwa in Abak council area of State against the popular Uyo township stadium which had been the acceptable venue over the years.

Our Correspondent gathered that the plot is at advanced stage and the plotters will advance provision of adequate security as their reason for the relocation of the Governorship primaries to military barracks which is over 30 kilometers away from the city capital.

Speaking with Journalists in uyo after a crucial meeting held at unique gardens Ewet housing estate yesterday, Mr. John Etefit one of the statutory delegates said the state government desirous to impose their anointed aspirant on the party has concluded plans to stampede the party into taking the primaries to Ibagwa barracks.

According to him, “ After fruitless efforts to get most of us to support the aspiration of Pastor Umo Eno hit brick wall, subtle and open threats have been employed which we resisted and now the idea of taking the primaries to the barracks have birthed.

Speaking further he explained, “we were told by core supporters of the government preferred aspirant that their final joker is the barracks where only their supporters will be allowed access and others supporting other aspirants turned back and if they insists on getting in, then soldiers will be directed to unleash mayhem on them”

Another statutory delegate Mr Asuquo Ekanem from Oruk Anam council area hinted that some top PDP state officials who are not buying into the Pastor Umo Eno project have quietly informed them that the state executive of the party are already tinkering with the idea of Ibagwa barracks venue to please the government.

In his words, “Democracy is fully under threat in Akwa Ibom state, the state government in sheer readiness to impose their preferred aspirant is leaving no stone unturned in enthroning dictatorship, they are no longer appealing or lobbying us to accept their aspirant but asking us to wait and see if we will even have access to the venue, we were informed that we will hear our names mentioned but accreditation tags will be given to their men on ground and there is nothing we will do about it”.

Other delegates who spoke with journalists appealed to well-meaning Nigerian, human rights groups, international community and other related bodies to turn their searchlight to Akwa ibom state as the primaries may set the once peaceful state on fire and unprecedented carnage”.

“Any venue outside the Uyo township stadium is not acceptable to us”, Mr Aniefiok Ekefre one of the delegates from uyo told journalists. “It must be one man one vote at the primaries, let the popular and acceptable aspirant emerge. They told us that their preferred aspirant is the God’s choice for Akwa ibom people, why arm-twisting the same people to embrace God’s choice? Akwa ibom people are now wiser and ready to change the narratives, there will be no third term by surrogate and we are not leaving the party for opportunists”.

The concerned delegates further vowed to embark on mass protest and petition the national secretariat of the party should the planned relocation of the governorship primaries to the barracks considered by the state chapter of the party.

“The essence of the relocation is to rig the primaries with ease after chasing away those they considered opposition to their project with soldiers but we won’t allow that to happen, we are ready to protect the future of our children and the coming generation with our blood, a few people cannot dictate to over seven million Akwa ibom people” Mrs. Maria Ekpe from IKA said.

When contacted on the raging matter, the state publicity secretary of the party Mr Borono Bassey told Journalists that the matter is still at the realms of speculation. In his very words, "It's purely speculations by outsiders at this moment".

2023: Panic grabs Aspiring PDP Adhoc Delegates as another form resurface.

By Theresa Donatus, Uyo

Aspiring Adhoc Delegates for the coming People's Democratic party (PDP) primaries in Akwa ibom state have been thrown into confusion with the emergence of a new form completely different from the initial one they purchased earlier from the party Secretariat.

The new form has a unique feature, a security barcode lacking in the previous one already purchased by thousands of people who are jostling to secure a spot from the 3 man Adhoc Delegates per ward across the state.

The Adhoc Delegates are expected to join the other statutory Delegates to determine the fate of Aspirants for various  political offices especially that of the state governorship Aspirants.

However in what appeared as a deliberate strategy to disenfranchised some Aspirants already handy with the forms without barcode, the party is said to be selling the  forms  with barcode to select adhoc delegates aspirants sympathetic to a favoured aspirant by the state government.

Some of the Aspirants who spoke with our reporter expressed deep shock that the PDP is selling different forms for the same Adhoc delegates election slated for the weekend.

Mrs Jane Bassey an aspirant for the coming Adhoc delegates election said the shocking revelation has thrown so many of them into confusion and anxiety.
" I have been told that the form l purchased from the party to stand for Delegates election this weekend may be fake and I keep wondering if it is possible for our party to deceive us and sell fake forms to members for any reason.
The forms currently in circulation is totally different from the initial ones we purchased. The current form has security barcode, my own has none''.

Mr Kenneth Ukpeh another aspiring Adhoc Delegate also expressed fear that most of the people who initially purchased the first batch of forms for Adhoc Delegates election may have been deceived by the party officials  and their  government collaborators.
In his words, " we may be in for a shocker this weekend, I got information that the current forms with barcode is the authentic form for the election. The forms have been sold out mostly to the  Aspirants sympathetic to a chosen governorship aspirant by  the incumbent administration and the rest with the initial forms mostly supporters of other guber aspirants are already out of the race''.

He  explained that if their fears become real then the party has started the transition to the next administration on a shaky and fraudulent note and should get ready for massive legal actions from the people.

" We are watching the unfolding scenario" said Mr Ikponke Etukudo another Adhoc Delegate aspirant holding the form without barcode. He further stated, " Any form of manipulating with the level of awareness among our people in this era will spell doom for the party in the State.

"We are watching the drama and my candid advice to the leadership of the party in the State is to guide their integrity jealously because karma and posterity awaits them at the post of their future and twilight of their career. We have labored for the party and reached a stage we must allow transparency and honesty to guide our actions. We are watching to see their next line of actions".

However Mr Paul Ikotidem who vowed to take legal action once denied the opportunity to stand the weekend election owing to purchasing form without barcode from same party said he has been reliably informed that the underground current is to sieve out those without forms with barcode to enhance the chances of the chosen aspirant whose supporters are already handy with the original forms.

When Contacted on the party position on the conflicting matter, the state public publicity secretary of the party Mr Borono Bassey said the party is yet to receive such complaints.
In his words" Such complaints have not reached the party".

He understands the problem  of Oro and how to take political steps to solve them. I am putting on his cap everywhere I go to show my support for him. My incoming Senator, your face show, your show shine', Akan, the renowned Oro youth leader, popularly known as 'The Man Don Come' declares.

A former Council Chairman and Chapter Chairman of PDP in Oron, Hon. Hogan Ita  said Oro people had a good cause to support Barr. Sampson for Senate.

Speaking on behalf of the Councillors, the Leader of Mbo Legislative Council, Hon. Edet Oboho, said that from Dr Sampson's antecedent and pedigree,  the Councillors have taken a decision to support him:

'We have come, we have seen and we have heard all that you have done for Oro nation and humanity. We are ready to work for your success in the Senate race. All of us are ready to support you', he assured.

Hon. Nelly Umoh and other Councillors who spoke praised Dr Ekong Sampson for his interest in Oro matters, saying that from his credentials, he deserves the Senate seat. The Councillors were particularly delighted that Barr. Ekong Sampson was not just asking them for support, he was engaging them maturely on how to join hands and improve Oro.

FEATURE 2023: PDP Upholds Zoning Matrix in A'Ibom

    By Freshgist

In democracy government, sharing of commonwealth and political power across lengths and breadths of the society takes foremost prominence and eminence. This is so, because democracy is a people-oriented government.

Supporting the arguments above, a lawyer, books author, journalist and leading aspirant for Eket Senatorial District (ESD) race, Rt Hon. (Barr.) Ekong Sampson, while responding to questions by journalists upon his return from Abuja to purchase expression of interest / nomination forms, opined that the "beauty of democracy is amplified when the people are behind you. Zoning is central to our democratic experiment".

A few days ago, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, proved itself as a party christened after democracy. In its State Executive Meeting, the party, among other things, resolved thus;

After a thorough process of distilling a consensus from the dominant positions canvassed by Elders, Stakeholders and members of our Party during the Federal

Constituency Tour, Exco resolved that the Senatorial Seats for the three (3)

Senatorial Districts in the State have been zoned as follows:

EKET SENATORIAL DISTRICT - Zoned to Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency

UYO SENATORIAL DISTRICT - Zoned to Uyo Federal Constituency

IKOT EKPENE SENATORIAL DISTRICT -  Zoned to Abak Federal Constituency."

The party also affirmed the zoning of Governorship Seat to Uyo Senatorial District. According to the party, these arrangements were necessary to further strengthen the party, give a sense of inclusion to all the senatorial districts and deepen the taproot of PDP in the state.

Remember, Barr. Ekong Sampson, during an interactive session on Inspiration FM recently argued thus;

"Eket Senatorial District needs zoning, perhaps, more than any other senatorial district in Akwa Ibom State, because of our diversity,  complexity, and plurality. Eket Senatorial District needs to implement zoning, because zoning is that key matrix of democracy that guarantees access to political power and opportunity".

Moreso, the stakeholders of Eket Senatorial District had, in January, zoned the Senate Seat in the area to Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency (IFC), and within Ikot Federal Constituency, there is a strong tide of opinion that the Senate Seat goes to Mkpat Enin, Reps goes to Ikot Abasi, while Eastern Obolo takes House of Assembly Seat. This arrangement is necessary for peaceful coexistence amongst the local government areas in the region.

The Senate Seat is zoned Mkpat Enin, because the relay of the Senate race in the senatorial district began in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, when, in 1999, the area offered her illustrious son, Sir Udoma Udo Udoma to serve the senatorial district in the Nation's Red Chamber. Since then, the batten has just been returned, after touring Eket and Oron Federal Constituencies, to Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency. And in the federal constituency, since Ikot Abasi Local Government Area is a firstborn, Mkpat Enin is a second born, followed by Eastern Obolo.

Embracing the zoning plank, ahead of the forthcoming party's primaries, aspirants from Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, who are peace loving and have respect for the party and stakeholders have adopted the status quo. For instance, in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, we only have aspirants who  are vying for House of Representatives. In Eastern Obolo, about eight aspirants have already indicated interest in the State House of Assembly. And in  Mkpat Enin, two aspirants are in the Senate contest.

These zoning arrangements will go a long way to strengthen the bond and peace in the region. This is in agreement with the opinion of the former two-term State Assembly Lawmaker, Barr. Sampson, who opined that zoning is an answer to peace in a democratic society.

Apostle Dr Elijah Jack, General overseer of His Divine Redeemed World Ministries, Mkpok, Onna Local government area of Akwa Ibom state

Recalled, gov Emmanuel had on January announced his former commissioner for lands and water resources, Umo Eno as his preferred successor in 2023, a decision which has generated mixed reactions.

Announcing the donation, Apostle Elijah said  apart from being a fellow pastor, it was upon the basis of what Umo Eno has done and numerous  achievements outside government including being a  sound entrepreneur as he  employed many youths  were the reason   to adopt governor Emmanuel's  preferred successor.

He said governor Emmanuel's preferred choice has the capacity  to carry everyone along as an entrepreneur, and very industrious son of the land from  Uyo senatorial district which the governorship seat is zoned.

Governorship aspirant 2023, Pastor Umo Eno

"yes I gave that token to the the party for registration because I don't like a situation where people struggle to achieve something that I know I have the capacity

"The essence of the meeting was to formally adopt the preferred candidate of our party, pastor Umo Eno as the choice of this ward, that means all other interests have been subsumed under that preferred candidacy of the governor of this state."

"As loyal party members of PDP, the governor has given us the direction and indication of who he finds fit to succeed him, and we are part and parcel of that succession plan. The ward today unanimously adopted Umo Eno as the sole candidate for the election, we have no other Aspirant and that is our decision."he said

Speaking with journalists shortly after the meeting, the leader of the ward, Obong Barr. Akaninyene Idem noted that all other interests in the party have been subsumed in the aspiration of Pst Eno.

While adopting Apostle Elijah Jack as one of the ward stake holders of PDP, briefly after he donated the sum, the leader applauded the cleric, for supporting his community in his capacity, called on other clergies to emulate him in community development.

According to him, "The essence of the meeting was to formally adopt the preferred candidate of our party, pastor Umo Eno as the choice of this ward, that means all other interests have been subsumed under that preferred candidacy of the governor of this state.

"As loyal party members of PDP, the governor has given us the direction and indication of who he finds fit to succeed him, and we are part and parcel of that succession plan. The ward today unanimously adopted Umo Eno as the sole candidate for the election, we have no other Aspirant and that is our decision."

He also noted that the decision was in tandem with the constitution as it allows for either direct primaries or for consensus, noting that it does not foreclose the fact that other aspirants can go and consult even as he added,

"here we have our preferred aspirant."

A'Ibom Govt charges Immigration to deploy New ways in Fighting Terrorism

By Theresa Donatus, Uyo

The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom state, HE Udom Emmanuel has tasked the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) on new approaches to protecting the nation, saying such innovations would check acts of  terrorism.

During a Stakeholders' Sensitization programme on the Nigeria Visa Policy Document (NVP 2020) organized by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Akwa Ibom State Command, Emmanuel maintained that a robust and proactive Immigration Service can be used to forestall terrorist attacks.

The governor ably represented by his deputy, Mr Moses Ekpo at the occasion, urged the NIS to take a cue from the Unites States, which have made their  Immigration Service part of their  Department of Homeland Affairs to prevent a repeat of the September 11, 2001 terrorists attack.

He applauded the collaboration of security agencies in the state saying the peace enjoyed in Akwa Ibom was due to to unity and work between them, adding that the state government will continue to work with all Federal agencies to make sure peace and tranquility prevails in the state.

"The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is a critical member of the Nigerian Security architecture. In most of the advanced world, it is part of the first line of national defence, given the critical role it plays in admitting visitors through various ports of entries in those nations.

"In today's world of asymmetric security situations, the seemingly innocent visitor you may have admitted into your country may be part of a terrorist sleeper cell. Such a visitor may have been sent by his or her sponsors with the expressed and evil command to cause a breach of public peace through acts of terrorism.

"The need therefore, for the Immigration Service to meet regularly, explore new approaches of protecting the nation, and thinking, anticipating and disrupting such evil designs has become even more urgent and imperative.

"I am optimistic that this Seminar, with the quality of the professionals assembled, will, at the end, come up with new ways and approaches by the Service to deliver its mandate and ensure that evil people are kept away from our shores," he stated

Addressing the sensitization meeting, the acting comptroller-general of Immigration, Isah Jere Idris, described visa as one of the strongest instruments used by nations to control the entry and exit of migrants into their territories; and  used to spur economic development, enhance global relationships and promote peace and security.

"The Nigeria Visa Policy (NVP 2020) is an ambitious document that would drastically transform the economy of our country. In the document, we have expanded Visa classes from mere six to 79 classes in three new categories of Short Visit Visa (28 classes), Temporary Residence Visa (36 classes) and Permanent Residence Visa (15 classes).

"The major highlight of the document is that we now have Visa classes for every conceivable purpose of travel unlike before when we issue only business or work Visa to anyone desirous of coming into the country." The comptroller general said.

Idris represented by the Zonal Coordinator Zone E, Owerri,  E C Ejiogu (ACG)  said  Akwa Ibom is currently one of the most business-friendly states in Nigeria today hence being rated the Second Best State in the attraction of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) rating after Lagos.

Stressing that such could not have been possible without the enormous works being done by the present leadership in the State, Idris he was proud of the efforts by the state especially so because the state is very special in many ways.

"Akwa Ibom State has the longest and largest coastline in the country. Its coastline measures about 129 kilometres. The aquatic resources are massive just as the need to emplace deliberate maritime security structure for effective protection is imperative."

He said there was however the need for more discussions and collaboration on how to work out a much more responsive and enduring security arrangement for the Blue Border areas of the state.

The Controller of immigration Service, Akwa Ibom State, George Chamlong Didel on his part  declared Akwa Ibom  the second most business friendly states in Nigeria, after Lagos.

He however bemoaned the high rate of human trafficking and crime of harvesting human parts in the state and pledged to redouble effort to tackle illegal migration in the state.

He however encouraged those with legitimate reasons to migrate to partner with the Service for authentic travel documents. he also informed the public of an existence of ECOWAS passport which could enable them do businesses around West African Countries.

"A lot of people do  not know of ECOWAS passport which could help you travel round West African Countries. It is most convenient to acquire because  you can get in within few hours. You don't have to wait for the standard  Nigerian Passport which may take a minimum of three weeks for renewal and six weeks for new one"

GOV EMMANUEL RETURNS FROM DUBAI WITH ASSURANCES OF MORE FDIs ...MOURNS DECEASED CLERIC EZEKIEL ATANG

By Freshgist

Governor Udom Emmanuel has assured Akwa Ibom people of his commitment towards attracting more investors and Foreign Direct Investment to boost the economy of Akwa Ibom State before the end of his administration next year.

Governor Udom Emmanuel made this known on Thursday at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, on arrival from an Annual Investment Meeting Dubai 2022.

The Governor stated that Akwa Ibom took advantage of the business summit to project its investment opportunities to global investors , private corporations, financial institutions, economic experts around the world.

He said that the State's brand name ‘IBOM' was well appreciated at the summit with major interests in the three major areas of Deep seaport, Industrial City and the Science Park that will attract huge Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the state.

"You know that we gave an assurance that we will work to the last day in office. I want to let you know that we were well received.

"I want to reassure you that the brand ' Ibom’ anywhere you mention will not go unnoticed especially in the business world.

"Our main attraction is trying to sell our Ibom Deep Seaport, Ibom Industrial City, because of the restrictions in China, we are trying to see how we partner another company for the Ibom Science Park because I believe that is the way forward. If we can get our ICT right a whole lot of our youths will be engaged."

The Chief Executive however expressed optimism that before the end of his administration two new factories will be added to the number of factories and industries in the State saying what would facilitate more investments will be an opportunity for the market to source equity.

Governor Emmanuel pointed out that the state has a lot of opportunities which investors affirmed will encourage investment, assuring that his administration will work tirelessly to ensure that the state attracts more Foreign Direct Investments (FDI).

Meanwhile, Governor Emmanuel later led a delegation of government functionaries and other eminent personalities to a funeral service of the deceased Lead Pastor of God’s House of Refuge,  Pastor Ezekiel Atang.

Affirming that it is not the year of a man that counts, but the life he lives, Governor Emmanuel said the size and composition of the crowd that thronged the funeral service to honour the Late Pastor Atang attested of how impactful his near-fifty years life had been, describing him as one of Akwa Ibom’s most credible clergyman.

Recalling the days of his interaction with the late cleric, the Governor further described Late Atang as a very good brother with an indebt understanding of the word of God in humility, adding that the message of the death of the deceased cleric put him in a feeling of dismay and great pain.

“Pastor Ezekiel Atang touched and impacted the lives of millions of people. He was such a good friend that anytime you call upon him, on any front, he will always be there. As you see him, the radiance on his face, so clear was his heart at any point in time.

"In my opinion, he was one of the most credible pastors we had in this state, in all ramifications. Whether he finished his work or not, he could have stayed a little longer so that we continue to share the fellowship”.

Udom Emmanuel encouraging members of the church to stay put and sustain the vision of the departed Man of God, said “the way we know those who were loyal and really standing, not having him as a father only when he was alive, is all those that will stay put to continue for his dreams in God’s House of Refuge”, adding that he hopes to see the church wax much stronger and Pastor Atang’s teachings sustained.

Highpoint of the event was the unveiling of a book “School of Marriage: The Legacy Edition”, a compilation of 50 of his books, which he was working on before his demise, as Governor Udom Emmanuel launched the book on behalf of his family and purchased some copies for worshippers of the Church.

Pastor George Izunwa of the Gateway Christian Centre, in his homily culled from James 4:13-17, admonished the living against procrastination in putting God-given talents to work.

The Preacher said the reason the world is celebrating the Late Pastor Atang who died before fifty is because he had an inner sense of urgency to impact the lives he needed to impact well enough before  his demise.

He therefore urged all to work with a sense of urgency while alive, to be celebrated at exit or only be mourned with regrets.

By Theresa Donatus, Uyo

The former speaker of Akwa Ibom House of Assembly disclosed that he would reactivate the abandoned Science Park to create jobs for the youths while a committee comprising former governors and top technocrats would be set up to advise the state government.

According to him, “I intend to use my wealth of experience as a public sector administrator, a lawyer, and an advocate of good governance to serve this state by bringing government closer to the people for socio-economic development, and to reposition Akwa Ibom State for greater prosperity under the theme of ‘Building Together, Growing Together.’

“We have been blessed with good leaders who have contributed in great measure towards the development of the state, with transformative projects and progressive policies in areas such as agriculture, education, and infrastructure etc.

“One example of such transformative policies is in the area of education – free and compulsory education programme, which was initiated by the administration of Governor Godswill Obot Akpabio and sustained by the administration of Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel with the aim of improving access to the education for young people.

“Aviation development is another example in this regard. The Victor Attah International Airport was initiated by Governor Victor Attah"

“Governor Udom has since continued with this vision leading to the birthing of an airline- Ibom Air and the implementation of various improvements at the airport and today effort is being made towards the completion of the MRO.

“Today, Ibom Air is the envy of other airline operators and a symbol of the innovation and willpower that Akwa Ibom State possesses.

“This is evidence of the synergy and continuity in policy implementation that has existed in our state, and that is why we intend to also continue building upon the achievements of previous and present administrations, add our own initiatives, all aimed at positioning us for broad-based prosperity.

“These policies continuity, adaption and improvement can also be seen in the deep seaport development and in the agricultural sector etc,” Luke said.

Iniama charges INEC to bring 2023 Elections Timetable Defaulters To Book

Mr James Iniama, A'Ibom governorship aspirant 2023

Theresa Donatus, Uyo

A popular gubernatorial aspirant in Akwa Ibom state the 2023 election, Mr James Iniama, has called on Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to bring all defaulters of the recently published elections timetable to book, without waiting for petitions.

In an exclusive interaction with our Correspondent in Uyo on Wednesday, The Estate Surveyor and Valuer reacted  on the recent assent given to the Electoral Amendment Act by President, Muhammadu Buhari, expressing doubts if the laws as stated would be monitored in the electioneering process, considering antecedents.

The Governorship hopeful who is aspiring under the People's Democratic Party (PDP), noted that some aspirants had gone ahead of the electioneering timetable to anoints consensus candidates for parties, not minding what the law stipulates, pointing out that the problem of the country has never been that of making laws but enforcing the law for those concerned to act accordingly.

He however emphasized the need for voter education, which according to him, would enlighten every voter on the to play the role of a watch dog to ensure that the right thing is being done during the elections, irrespective of persons involved.

"The law is no respected of persons, so we will not creat a situation where the electoral bill treats one class of persons differently and treats the other one lesser than the other.

"For instance, the electoral bill has been passed and INEC followed up with a Timetable of activities; if you read the timetable, you will realize that people had bridged that timetable substantially. Without INEC waiting for petitions to come: they should bring such people to book". He maintained.

Commending the President of the Federal Republic, the National Assembly, INEC and those who had an input in the making of the Electoral Act, Iniama said the achievement has given the nation hope that there would be an Electoral Act that serves the interest of the electorates and electrical process in the country.

"We will keep evolving and as long as we are not static and not act as if we have arrived; there is hope.

"The problem of Nigeria is not that we do not have laws;  we have laws but the enforcement of the law has always been the challenge. What we should emphasize on now, is voters education. Let us all be watch dogs and ensure that the bill is followed to the letter". He stressed.

He mentioned that he is diligently following the Electoral Act and the timetable as published by INEC in his aspiration, stating that his project is not personal but meant  for the critical masses even as he has people who share and partner in his vision to take the state to the next level.

"Now that the electoral bill has been given assent to, my aspiration is on top gear. We will continue with consultations and we are very hopeful that we are doing the will of God." He noted.
